Sun goes down

as performed by Aliaksandar Patlis

Lyrics (Cyrillic)

Lyrics (Lacinka)

A ty mnie ŭsio kažaš, što ja niedarečy.
Kupliu tabie cebar, pastaŭliu lia chaty,
Chaj tabie napomnić, što ja niežanaty.

English

The sun goes down, shining in windows,
Pauly at Annie glances sideways.
Oh, my destiny, your blue eyes,
When I don’t see you, my heart hurts.

Like a grouse, that does not want to fly,
So does my heart for you flutter.
Like the wheels that creak ungreased,
So to you I’m stuck like a pig to mud.

Withered like a leaf in the breath of an oven I am,
Yet are you telling me that I’m out of place.
I’ll buy you a barrel, put near your house,
Let it remind you that I’m not married.

Guelder-rose (or Cuckoo)

as performed by Volha Liubavina

Lyrics (Łacinka)

Kalina-kalina, kalina maja,
Da čaho ž, kalinuška, rana raśćvila.
Matulia-matulia, matulia maja,
Nie dadaŭšy rozumu, zamuž addala

Ŭ čužuju staronačku nieviadomuju,
Ŭ vielkuju družynačku nieviasioluju.
Pokul ja ŭsie źviestki pieraviedala,
Da nie raz ja śliozkami paabiedala.

Kab ja zrabilasia ziaziuliaj raboj,
To ja paliaciela b da mamy radnoj.
Kalina-kalina, kalina maja,
Da čaho ž, kalinuška, rana raśćvila.

English

Guelder-rose, dear my guelder-rose,
How early you blossom!
Mother, dear my mother, so unwary
was I when you married me off

In a strange land unknown,
In a long marriage unmerry.
Until I learned all my lessons,
So many times was I shedding tears.
*lit. was I lunching off tears

If I could become a cuckoo spotted
I would fly home to my mother dear.
Guelder-rose, dear my guelder-rose,
How early you blossom!

Remark

It should be noted that it is typical for the Slavic folk poetic tradition to present wedding, as seen by the bride, as a mournful situation: she undergoes a transition to the husband’s family and houshold, generally in another geographic region, and at once becomes detached from her blood family (and the only one she has known so far), from her friends, ground and nature, with no perpective of ever seeing them again. Those are the songs of fare-thee-well to one’s whole life sung by a young lyrical hero. Another tragic bridal song: «Wherever would I go» by Hanna Blahava.
