Trasianka: the art of *hybreeding

Trasianka Attention: this page is about a peculiar variety of Belarusan. Its word usage, syntax and morphology does non reflect that of Belarusan standard language. is a specific vernacular register of Belarusan language. It is characterized by abundant usage of Russian lexical units having proper Belarusan counterparts and, at the same time, by applying Belarusan morphological and phonological conventions thereupon. The final rendering of the speech thus contains piecemeal or even chaotic mixing, not to say confusion, of Belarusan and Russian lexemes, morphemes and markers.
This means that to understand it accurately one needs to master both Russian and Belarusan languages in order to correctly isolate the compounds, since the two are close languages and many similar yet confering different meaning elements exist.
Habitat
The most simple recipe to produce Trasianka is to force a Belarusan-speaking person or group of people to accomodate their (often dialectal) Belarusan speach to standard Russian language without allowing or giving enough time to properly learn its phonology and syntax. This phenomenon happened in the 1980s due to massive labor migration from villages to towns. While in 1959 31% of the Belarusan population lived in towns, in 1990 the share was already 66%. At the same time the role of the Russian language was increasingly important as it was endorsed by the Communist administration and was often considered as more primary one.
Nowadays, the Trasianka-speaking individuals could most often be found in two communities:
- 1) former Belarusan-speaking villagers, new town dwellers and
- 2) state officials.
Trasianka can be used on purpose as to create comic effect, especially referring to the two latter groups. Two examples illustrate that.

The phonemic principle of the Belarusan orthography requires the explicit distinction between the sounds /ɔ/ and /ɛ/ when they are denoted by the letters ё and е. Dotting the ё is hence mandatory in Belarusan orthography. This simplifies the reading since е is always vocalized /ɛ/, ё — /ɔ/.

Final remarks
Russian language speakers who has not been specifically trained in Belarusan language, tend to not distinguish Trasianka and Belarusan. Due to its more frequent presence in the media, as compared to Standard Belarusan, Russian language speakers often mistake Trasianka register for the latter.
